Linux+ (CompTIA IM)
Certification Training - Exam XK0-002
Introduction
Why should you learn about Linux? It is one of the fastest growing operating systems, and it is inexpensive and flexible. Linux is also a major player in the small and mid-sized server field, and it is an increasingly viable platform for workstation and desktop use as well. By understanding Linux, you will increase your standing in the job market. Even if you already know the Windows or Mac Operating System and your employer uses these systems exclusively, understanding Linux will give you an edge when you are looking for a new job or if you are looking for a promotion.
The computing Technology Industry Association (CompTIA) has developed its Linux+ exam as an introductory certification for people who want to enter careers involving Linux. The exam is meant to certify that an individual has the skills necessary to install, operate, and troubleshoot a Linux system and is familiar with Linux-specific concepts and basic hardware. The purpose of this course is to help you pass the newly updated Linux+ exam (XK0-002). Because this exam covers basic Linux installation, management, configuration, security, documentation, and hardware interactions, those are the topics that are emphasized in this course. You will learn enough to get a Linux system up and running and how to configure it for many common tasks.
What is Linux?
Linux is a clone of the Unix OS that has been popular in academia and many business environments for years. Formerly used exclusively on large mainframes, Unix and Linux can now run on small computers – which are actually far more powerful than the mainframes of just a few years ago. Because of its mainframe heritage Unix (and hence also Linux) scales well to perform today’s demanding scientific, engineering, and network server tasks.

Course Overview/Description
The Linux Certification has been developed by the Linux Professional Institute (LPI), a non-profit organization. This Professional Linux Certification is designed to provide a usable, common measurement of Linux skills when considering people for hire, contracting or other roles. The Linux Professional Institute LPIC is an industry recognized certification. TheLinux Professional Institute believes in the need for a standardized, multi-national, and respected programme to certify levels of individual expertise in Linux. This programme must be able to satisfy the requirements of Linux professionals, as well as organizations, which would employ or contract such professionals. The goal is to design and deliver such a programme from within the Linux community, using both volunteer and hired resources as necessary. The LPI resolve to undertake a well-considered, open, disciplined development process, leading directly to the establishment of a recognized and widely-endorsed Linux certification body.
Requirement for Linux Certification
Linux Certification candidates are required to pass the XK0-002 exam, covering fundamental system administration activities that are common across all flavours of Linux.
Admission Requirements
Grade 12 (matric) or equivalent or Mature Student Status. Have completed either A+ or N+ and have 2 years working experience with an aptitude for programming
Career Opportunities
The Linux Certification is appropriate for individuals pursuing a career in information technology with experience related to the Linux Operating System. Individuals may be required to perform the following tasks:
-
Working at the UNIX command line
-
Performing easy maintenance tasks: help users, add users to a larger system, backup and restore, shut down and reboot
-
Installing and configuring a workstation and connecting it to the LAN, or a stand-alone PC via modem to the Internet.
-

Disk Management
-
Package & Process management
-
System Documentation
-
Networking
-
Security
-
Hardware
Prerequisites/Audience
Students should have a fundamental knowledge of at least one operating system and some familiarity with basic networking concepts. Experience with Windows or a network operating system (NOS) is preferred.
This programme is designed for entry-level students, who wish to manage Linux systems, and/or individuals interested in obtaining a LPIC designation and/or becoming CompTIA Linux+ certified.
Must have access to a personal computer at home, be fluent in English and be able to type with accuracy and speed as the duration of this course you will be working with the Command Line Interface (CLI), or what is known as the "Console". In other words, you will not have any use for your mouse since there will be no Graphical User Interface (GUI) environment, all the action takes place at the command prompt
Course Outcomes
The definitions of "course outcomes" provided are merely guidelines to equivalent knowledge. As you know if you have a talent for working with computers or if you are a hard-worker who is prepared to play with the operating system until you are sure of yourself, then you are likely to not need to follow these guidelines and you will exceed the qualification levels that are suggested here.
Therefore, when we say that your knowledge would be equivalent to a "System Administrator", what we are really saying is that although you will have an extensive knowledge of Linux (we have structured the courses to ensure that there are sufficient labs and exercises), the additional knowledge - the knowledge of specific company set-ups or specific pieces of hardware - will still have to be gained by your experience.
(Course material, 2 national examinations, practical & class fees included)
